The Implementation of Migrant Resource Center and Associate Activities under the Safer Migration Project (SaMi)

Description:
DSWCN has been implementing the Safe Migration project in Jaleshwor Municipality, Mahottari. This program involves the formation and mobilization of community literacy women’s groups and other community-level groups in the working areas. The program aims to provide reliable information, capacity-building, and support for potential migrant workers to make informed decisions regarding foreign employment.

Objectives:

  1. To provide reliable information for informed decision-making and adequate protection throughout the migration cycle.
  2. To build the capacity of potential migrant workers to make informed decisions by providing accurate and clear information related to foreign employment.
  3. To support Nepali potential migrants, both women and men, by providing them with accurate and relevant information on foreign employment.

Major Activities:

  1. Provide literacy classes to committee group members once a week throughout the year.
  2. Conduct in-depth orientation sessions for potential migrants at the community level.
  3. Provide orientation on safer foreign employment to the community.
  4. Offer orientation to police, journalists, and local governments at the district level.
  5. Publish and distribute IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) materials.
  6. Support the broadcast of radio jingles on safer migration and other foreign employment issues.
  7. Build the capacity of the migrant rights network.
  8. Conduct midterm project reviews at the district level with stakeholders.
  9. Hold local government project management committee meetings.
  10. Carry out monitoring and evaluation by local stakeholders.

Achievements:

  1. Provided financial literacy classes to 16 community groups to help manage their financial status.
  2. Provided counseling services to 4 community groups.
  3. Offered services from MRC (Migrant Resource Center) related to safer migration to 3351 beneficiaries.
  4. Supported 21 beneficiaries in receiving various skill training.
  5. Assisted 140 beneficiaries in accessing justice.
  6. Facilitated the refund of Rs1,51,18,000 from various agents and companies to victims.
  7. Formed a district-level migrant network committee.
  8. Formed 5 palika-level migrant network committees.
